Freedom Blues – 4th of July in America

This week’s playlist celebrates the home of jazz, the blues and of course, rock and roll.

America’s complicated, filled with contradictions, much like the musical art forms and artists it spawned. So America’s birthday is a great time to question the meaning of freedom as the 4th of July is a potent reminder that no one is free until we are all free. In order to truly stand as one nation we must ensure liberty and justice for all, regardless of skin color, religious belief and sexual orientation. We should hold our authorities, and most importantly, ourselves to the highest standards to remove the injustices and inequities throughout this great country and to actually practice what we so often preach, true freedom.

Luckily music provides us the ultimate freedom. Freedom of expression. Freedom of mind, body and soul. Freedom to escape but also freedom to speak up. Freedom of speech and freedom to ask what’s going on.

After all, freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose. Thankfully music allows us to lose ourselves and our freedom blues.

Just like America this week’s playlist is diverse and full of wonder! What American favorites of yours did we leave off this week’s playlist?

Have a happy, safe and rockin’ 4th of July!
